Enough from me Here is the Interview!!!

Where did you grow up?

Well, to be honest, I haven’t yet. Nah but on the real, I’m born and raised in Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs, always floated around the Yarra Ranges/Valley/Maroondah/Knox area’s, 3 Primary school’s & 1 high school from which I was expelled – Oops.

Describe your Sound/Style?

Somewhere between two-thousand-and-now and the ’90s, I like to say I make “contemporary boom-bap”, as it’s complex in the lyricism and classic stylistically in the production, but with a modern twist using modern synth’s, drums and samples.
I’ve always tried to do a little bit of everything as to not stick myself in a box, From poppy bangers to political inspirational tunes, to comedy and battle rap styles, But I definitely pride myself in my use of punchlines, wordplay & similes – Even on the personal songs I’m trying to make it complex, ya’ know?

How Long have you been Performing?

Performing? 3 years. Standing on stage with my head down rapping into a microphone pacing back and forth? A further 8 years before that.
In that time I’ve managed to score some pretty good shows including ones alongside the likes of Bliss N Eso & Madchild (CA), as well as a plethora of packed to not packed at all underground shows… We all start somewhere though, hey?

What inspired your music?

I think it stemmed from my passion for reading and writing as a youngin’, I used to write little short stories using various anime & fantasy characters from the shows I would watch and books I would read in my pre-teen years, At about 7 I discovered hip hop via Eminem (Typical mid-20’s white boy story, I know) but it wasn’t until 13 when I met an old friend who was just as into as I and we initially started writing raps together instead of doing our classwork every Maths class we had, first recording into a $5 call centre-Esque cheap shitty mic from Go-Lo – We were bad, really bad. Flashforward 14 years and ol’ mate is nowhere to be seen and I kept at it and evolved into something not so terrible.

What’re the best Bars you have written or heard?

Honestly, there’s so many over the years that I playback my old shit and am always like “I think I was trying to do something there” – Recently I think I’ve written a couple of standouts though, this one-liner from Game Over which I released earlier in the year is simple, yet effective “You’ll be on some Hindi rap don’t really want this beef at all”, If we’re talking more than one line; “Burning off that ethanol, Truth is you don’t peep the flame / Just judge me off my cover that’s why you won’t ever see my page” – Anybody with an understanding of chemistry will understand that there are levels to that Ethanol reference.
As for other artists? A lot of Joe Budden’s punchlines tend to resonate with me, the one that’s always stuck is “You there when it’s bright? Better be there when it’s dark / If you weren’t there for the ride, Don’t be there when I park”, his simple yet hard-hitting style is something I’ve started to lean towards in my later years – People aren’t gonna understand subliminal metaphor’s if even I myself in hindsight am unsure of what I was doing at the time.

Who are your top 5 producers?

No particular order I’d have to go with; Statik Selektah, Just Blaze, DJ Premier, araabMUZIK & 8 Bars, Honorable mentions to Aussie legends Trials, K21 & Adit – Always came with that sound that only we have out here

Do you have anyone that you consider your mentor? How has their help or advice shaped you?

First-person to come to mind would be the homie, Connor Jones, He’s always been around to give me tips on the post-production side of things when I need an idea to make the song “pop”, Other than that I’ve never really been able to take on advice well unless it’s advice I want or need, It’s a bit of a personal flaw and why it’s taken a lot longer than most to get to a point where I’m proud of my music, But shoutout to anybody that has tried over the years!

What would be your dream collaboration with any Artist of any Genre?

There’s two, both of different styles, The first would be Boi 1-da on the drums, 8Bars on the keys/synth, Joe Budden on the middle verse and Michael Jackson (RIP) on the hook. It would be on some sentimental/deep shit. The second would be Premier on the beat, Royce Da 5’9, Eminem, Big L (RIP) & I going back and forth like a cypher.

Advice for the upcoming artist?

Don’t ever double-cross me.

What are some current projects you’re working on?

I’ve been slowly grinding away at my next album Final Cut for the better part of the year, it’s in its final stages now but I want to get some video’s and the show’s organised before I go releasing it prematurely, a mistake I’ve often made in the past, So we’re looking at sometime early next year for that to release. In the meantime I’ve currently got 4/7 songs ready for B Mixes #2 a short mixtape of remixes of popular hip hop and pop songs to follow-up 2018’s B Mixes #1 to hold people over until then, I will be releasing that ASAP.

Do you have someone you want to recognize or shout out?

Shoutouts to my team over at @lostcityproductionsaustralia it’s been a slow year, but next year we plan to bring back regular gigs to Melbourne’s hip hop underbelly.

Message to the Youth?

Just keep doing you, I was socially outcasted after releasing my first song despite being a “popular” kid at the time, And it’s a story I’ve heard from far too many of my peers, for some reason it’s still “weird” to be the “kid that raps” in Australia, but once you get past all that high school drama, people grow up, you find a new circle and there’s a thriving underground scene out there just waiting to accept you for who you are. Don’t stop being you, ever. Oh and drop the fake accents before it’s too late. Sorry, Had to.

Spotlight Series (Part 32) Jeneral Mc Interview

Spotlight Series (Part 32)

This brings about the 1st Artist of the Week.

Jeneral Mc is a solo Hip Hop artist Straight out of the Hills region of Adelaide, South Australia.

He is a Stylistic Assassin on the Mic and a versatile MC that has one hell of a delivery.

Whether it be switching the flows or spitting the raw lyricism and he raps a tapestry of skill over well-produced beats and he is a major talent.

To me, I get the hint of Nostalgia and a raw memorable experience as you can see feel the message it sets the scene and shows you his vision.

I see Jeneral MC being a big name in Oz Hip Hop.

Supporting the likes of Bliss N Eso, Terra Firma and many more, Even woking with Top tier producers like Eslev, Badcop and debate and Many more.

Jeneral MC’s links are below make sure you check him out and support this Legend!!!

https://open.spotify.com/artist/3qF2eXW4yc3CURfznL4R57 https://www.jeneralmc.com/ https://www.facebook.com/THEJENERALMC/ https://www.instagram.com/jeneral_mc/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCm5Wl7CjujsTPPfs6z6klkQ

Enough from me Here is the Interview!!!

Why the name Jeneral?

It’s a play on words using the name of a dear family member

Where did you grow up?

All over the place… Earliest memories are from a small town in Victoria called Harrow, then Hamilton, then moved to SA in Mt Pleasant, Gumeracha, Birdwood and finally spent most of my younger years in Aldgate.

What inspired your music?

Different things inspire different songs. Sometimes it’s just a party jam, sometimes it’s relationships with women and friends, sometimes it’s world issues and sometimes I just wanna get high and write meaningless words that are fun to rhyme together

How Long have you been Rapping/Producing?

Been rapping for almost 20 years now. I don’t do a lot of production, I prefer to focus on the song structure and lyricism.

Describe your Sound/Style?

This is so subjective because we can only describe sounds based on what we’ve heard in the past. I sound like JENERAL. If you haven’t heard him before, then go check him out on YouTube or Spotify!

Advice for the upcoming artist?

Take the time to understand what your highest values are. And know that these will change over time. Spend your time doing things that align with your highest values. Learn to be ok with people saying your music isn’t what they’re looking for and understand that that is just one person’s opinion… And opinions are just like assholes… Everyone got one. Know your goals. Put ’em on your wall. And take massive action towards them every single day. Boom.

What is the first album you ever owned?

I went to the States when I was 14 to visit my sister and she showed me this deal where you could sign up for a CD catalogue and get the first 10 CDs for $1 each – then the plan was to just skip the country and never buy anymore haha. This was my first music purchase… Can’t remember all of them but some were

Warren G; Regulate… G Funk Era Nas; Illmatic Pearl Jam; Vitalogy Cake; Fashion Nugget Smashing Pumpkins; Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness Nirvana; Unplugged in New York

What would be your dream collaboration with any rapper or producer?

Rick Rubin would be the ultimate producer for me… And doing a track with The Beatnuts would be mad

Do you have anyone that you consider your mentor? How has their help or advice shaped you?

This is something I wish I made an effort to bring into the mix… But I’ve had help from mates along the way like Visionz from Soul Elixr, Eslev from Full Tote Odds, Balazs Varga and some hot tips from PJ Murton. They’ve all helped in different ways from song structuring, production, promotion, marketing and stage presence. I would say I’ve had remote mentors in lyricism by studying the greats like Common, Guru, Talib Kweli, Eminem, Pharaoh Monche and Mos Def.

What are some current projects your working on?

Just finished promoting my second single Johnny Oh Snap… Out now on Spotify. Got my debut EP coming out in February 2020 and am putting together the film clip for the title track “Cold Chillin” at the moment.

And am currently writing the next songs for the second EP.

What is your top 5 Artists Or producers or Albums?

This is huge so I’ll just stick with producers Griz Just Blaze Kanye Rick Rubin The Beatnuts

Message to the Youth?

The quality of your life is dictated by your beliefs, about yourself, others and the meaning you give to events that happen. We can’t control everything that happens to us. But you can choose what you believe and the meaning you assign to things outside your control. So get good at choosing the right beliefs. And get a mentor … Doesn’t have to be some guru, just someone who has achieved what you want and is willing to share their experiences to help you on your journey.

Spotlight Series (Part 31) Danny Bars Interview

Danny Bars Interview

This brings about the 2nd Artist of the Week.

The second Artist we have is Danny Bars who is a Rapper based in Newcastle and he got in contact with us to tell his story and man he had a story to tell!!

His Bars are filled with stories, Political references, Punchlines with a side of Bravado.

Independent and ready to release new music he is gonna turn some heads this year.

This one is pretty big so I will cut down my usual banter and intro and get to it.

Danny’s links are below make sure you check him out and support this Underground artist!!!

Enough from me here is the Interview.

Where did you Grow up?

When people ask where I grew up/where I’m from I sigh (on the inside) cuz its a pretty complicated answer even though its usually the shortest in a Q&A – to keep it brief – my parents are both fully English raised in Chelmsford a smaller city about 30mins from London – my Dad was in Foreign Exchange and as he didn’t have a degree he moved up in his business by being A.)really good at his job/creating personal&business relationships and B.) being willing to move at the drop of a hat.

With that in mind, I was born in Tokyo, Japan (my Birth Certificate is in Japanese) but I was still born a UK citizen and have no legal ties to Japan as we left when I was old enough to fly (8weeks) to my Dad’s next job in New Zealand – I became a Kiwi citizen as I lived there till age 5 (fun fact, ex-NZ Prime Minister John Key was a family friend and was at my 1st Bday because before politics he worked in FX Sales with my Dad in Wellington)

At age 5 we moved to NYC for a few months before relocating to the NJ Suburbs that many NY workers commute from – I lived in the US from age 5 to age 24 (and lost that Kiwi accent REAL quick haha) but when I turned 15 I became a ‘naturalized citizen’ meaning I’m actually a ‘tri-citizen’ as I have UK/US/NZ passports (and live in Australia – Newcastle specifically on my NZ passport as it doubles as a Special Category Visa) – I’m also a three-time first-generation immigrant, In today’s world I like to tell close-minded/racist people that because the fact that I’m white/male/English has given me a pass that isn’t fair but that’s the life I guess…so in summation, despite my US accent and spending just over half my life there I still identify as English (especially with the whole Trump thing haha)

How long have you been Rapping for?

I’ve been rapping for almost 16 years, I’m 31 now and started when I was 16 just writing raps because my mates and I took a TV Prod. class in High School and would just use Garage Band (this was 2005ish) to make beats and eventually i was the one that started rapping/writing to them since i was a fan of more lyrical rappers at the time (50 Cent/G-Unit/Dipset etc was blowing up then but I was discovering ‘Indy/Alt’ Rap like DOOM, Aesop Rock and producers like Preemo/Dilla/Madlib…then Lupe Fiasco started getting radio airplay which I couldn’t believe – and they, in my opinion, were lyrically echelons above what my friends listened to (though the one thing we agreed on, atleast until ‘Encore’ was that Eminem was one of the best ever) – I started recording music with a 20$mic/Sony Acid/1 Hip Hop sample kit/a dress sock to put over the mic as a cheap pop filter then when I went to Uni aged 17/18 I went to my first paid studio session in a BAD part of Philly but it was a big thing for me then.

After that, I found Radio/TV/Film majors at Uni and was able to record mixtapes and albums/EPs for free as they needed stuff for their portfolio’s etc and one was to promote a clothing company startup but then I started playing house parties/fundraisers/uni events…at one point my buddy Matt and I went door to door through the uni dorms tryna sell my mixtape. My biggest gig in the US was at Philly’s The Art Garage that’s hosted many Philly Native artists over the years and it was a pretty packed 200-300 people, nothing big, but the buzz I felt on stage is something I’ll chase until I physically can’t rap/gig anymore!

But now when people ask about how long I’ve rapped I just say, “15 years or so but only seriously for the last 10” – cuz that’s when I started gigging, then 5yrs ago I joined my former label that I’m not even wasting time naming here but I came away with two professional-quality albums, 5 Music Videos and a tough lesson the music biz (the former label head/producer posted bounties in exchange for my address/drunk death threats on social media etc) But I have done a gig in Sydney for Undergroundfest and opened for one of my favourite rappers, Locksmith (US) and PHFat (South Africa) as well as local acts like Electric Elements Crew/Sleepwalkers/BigRedCap/Nhostic&DJ Riley JM and many other talented acts not named here just in Newcastle which has a really underrated hip hop scene in my opinion.

Describe your Sound/Style?

It’s tough to describe my style cuz it has evolved over 15yrs but not much, I hate when people ask you ‘who you sound like’ – ya know, I don’t want to be another Eminem, I want to be the first Danny Bars – BUT sometimes if someone can’t hear your music the best you can do is try and classify it so I just say that I do ‘Alternative Hip Hop’ as that’s a catch-all term for artists I do like and probably emulate parts of their skillsets without even realizing it but that group includes Madvillain/DOOM, Aesop Rock, Eminem till 2004 and Lil Wayne from 2005-2008 during his punchline/bravado heavy mixtape days…

I am glad you asked the question though because I had little choice over beat selection when on my former label so my bars were almost all bravado/punchline based because rapping something real and candid over a generic trap beat just doesn’t sound right – so my new album just needs to be recorded/edited but the beats were done by local Newy producer TheifSweat and have much more in common with newer minimalist beats while still maintaining some variety through using samples/boom bap etc to give the production a vibe similar to J-Dilla/DJ Premier/Madlib…

But the other big thing I’m working on style-wise is basically creating a genre with a mate Andrew from Between the Lines in Tighes Hill – we call it JamRap and its basically an evolving collective that always includes Andy’s guitar riffs and my raps but will also have other guitarists/bass/drums/vocalists who can join if/when the chemistry is right – we call it JamRap cuz ‘Alternative-Experimental-Folk-Blues-Hip-Hop’ was a bit of a mouthful haha. But it’s cool cuz we’ve gotten good responses from fans of rap and fans of the other genre’s we’re blending.

Advice for the upcoming artist?

As far as advice I would say – find what you’re truly good at and do that, I don’t make beats cuz when I did they were okay, not great, just okay but as someone who’s always spoken a LOT and FAST since I was a kid I feel like rapping was what I was meant to do…I don’t mean to sound negative but it feels like everyone wants to rap but some people just aren’t meant to, I mean, someone’s gotta be a listener right? It’s just that Hip Hop has almost NO barrier to entry, with other genres you have to learn instruments buy equipment etc, but if you have a phone you can download free beats, type out some lyrics, record/edit the vid on your phone and post it just like that – and to be honest, it’s bringing the overall talent in rap down…that’s just a reality sadly.

Regarding the business side, don’t worry about trying to make money off your music, focus on getting it HEARD – the rest will follow if it’s meant to…

Lastly, the best advice I can give as far as writing technically based multi-syllable rhymes etc is to focus on the vowel sounds – the best rappers rhyme words that don’t really rhyme technically – for example, one of my oldest songs opens with “I’m super ill/so I shoot to kill/like the Zapruder Film” I didn’t look for ‘what rhymes with super’ I just focused on the vowel sounds so ‘Super ill’ is just a hard ‘U’ in super and a soft ‘i’ in ill and ‘shoot to kill/Zapruder film’ both have the hard u/oo sound and the soft ‘i’ sound – sorry if that doesn’t make sense but if/when it clicks you’ll start taking BIG strides with your writing…

Oh and don’t let anyone tell you what you can’t do (even me earlier haha) – if they are then they’re probably insecure – if you love it, do it anyway, for me, writing can be cathartic and therapeutic even if I don’t post or release the song or anything…

What is the first album you ever owned?

The first album I owned was the edited cassette tape of The Slim Shady LP and I just listened to that on my walkman for a year or so till the Marshall Mathers LP came out then I also remember having the edited ‘Chronic: 2001’ album on tape too – although if I’m being 100, I also remember having KoRn’s ‘Follow the Leader’ and Kid Rocks ‘Devil Without a Cause’ but those Em tapes are what made me fall in love with rap – but when I discovered alternative/indy rap I fell in love all over again when I heard three albums: Madvillainy by Madvillain (DOOM and Madlib), the DOOM/Dangermouse/AdultSwim album ‘The Mouse and the Mask’ and ‘Labor Days’ by Aesop Rock – all highly recommended to this day!

Who is your top 5 Artists Or producers or Albums?

Top 5s…Rappers, not in order would be: Pre-2005 Eminem, MF DOOM, Aesop Rock, Billy Woods, Earl Sweatshirt (and Kendrick even though that’s 6 haha) As far as Albums all I know is that Em’s first 3 (not including infinite) are a CLASSIC trilogy – I also rank Jay-Z’s Blueprint Album and Black Album very highly and most recently ‘Doris’ by Earl Sweatshirt and ‘Known Unknowns’ by Billy Woods.

Far as producers, id go right away with Ant of Atmosphere, J-Dilla, DJ Premier, Dr.Dre, and Madlib…and I know its 6 but id even say Kanye even though he’s had some big misses and he’s a dick – he’s had more hits than misses and some hits are truly amazing (he’s done SO MANY) starting with Jay-Z beats back in the day to his own beats on his first three (dope in my opinion) albums in the 2000s and did beats for tracks like ‘The Cool’ by Lupe Fiasco off his debut and more recently one of my favourite albums of last year, ‘DAYTONA’ by Pusha-T – I don’t do gospel but he had at least 5 DOPE beats on his new ‘Jesus is King’ project.

What is one experience in life that, without it, you wouldn’t be the artist you are today?

As far as ‘one moment’ its tough to say (one is def the first time I saw ‘My Name Is’ on MTV and ‘discovered’ rap – Rosa Parks by Outkast also got big around that time) but one that really sticks out – my Mum’s quite young and was a ‘cool Mum’ back in the day – anyway it was the summer of ’99 I believe and ‘Forgot About Dre’ was everywhere and it was on the radio as we pulled into our garage – my Mom was always impressed that I could memorize/rap along, to begin with – but Em’s double verse in the middle of the track was just starting when she turned the engine off – I kept rapping along in perfect time and about a minute later we got inside and I turned the radio on and I was dead on in sync with Em’s bars down to the syllable and my Mum said she knew I’d make it as a rapper – and she still does, top fan haha.

Who would be your Ultimate Feature/Colab?

Ultimate feature – even though he’s fallen off a bit recently I’d still go with Eminem cuz he’s basically the reason I started rapping and no matter what he’ll always be in the G.O.A.T. convo so yeah, id go with Em – plus, if I’m able to get Eminem on a track it means I’m rich and or famous so that’s always good haha.

What are some current projects your working on?

Don’t wanna make this Q&A even longer as I mentioned some stuff earlier but to recap I have my solo album ‘Jawn Doe’ produced by ThiefSweat coming late 2019/Early 2020 and right around that same time I’ll be putting out a ‘JamRap’ EP (current working title: Welcome to JamRap)

You can hear live versions of a song or two of ours (Like ‘Gods > GOATs’) on DannyBars.Bandcamp.Com and you can still see the music vids from my label days on Facebook.com/DannyBarsRaps and click on the videos tab.

Oh and I also found 4-6 partially finished songs that were meant to be on my third label album which was nixed soon as I left but I had written all 15 tracks already so any early versions are getting posted under the title ‘Unfinished: An EP’ with the only FULL/finished song, the single ‘mouseTRAP’ up on my Bandcamp page too – however when ‘Jawn Doe’ is released I will delete ‘Unfinished’ so I can shut that chapter of my career and move on the exciting new stuff as I haven’t laid a track down in a studio setting in almost 3yrs now so its time to show people how I’ve changed since leaving the label/growing personally/turning 30…and 31, haha but I’m REALLY hype about the JamRap stuff as its just so different with such broad appeal I hope people dig what I dig about it but that’s up to them haha.

Who do you think the best in Oz is right now?

I’ll be honest, I busk and do other music stuff like private parties/collabs/ghostwriting etc to pay the bills and busking makes up the majority of that but I’m getting by doing what I love and getting my name out there but honestly, it does make it harder to get into working on my own stuff when busking makes something I love (rap) a job – a fun as shit one – but its still a job for me so I went from being the guy who woke up and read all the hip hop blogs during my morning shit but now I barely keep up with US rap let alone Aussie Rap…

I don’t have any issues with Aussie rap at all, and after being here 7years now/collaborating with Aussies on everything, I’m becoming an American sounding Aussie rapper myself – I know its a boring answer but i heard Hilltop Hoods album The Hard Road when I was a kid in the US and when I heard the restrung version with the live orchestra remakes as a young teen in the US I was BLOWN away, I showed EVERYBODY – its corny but that’s probably my fav AUS album – I haven’t seen too many rappers live that are AUS based since being here but Rapaport and P.Smurf were really good live and were cool to banter/freestyle with after their sets but that was a few years back now. Hopefully, the next great Aussie Rapper is reading this right now haha!

Message to the Youth?

For the youth – do you – don’t try and be something you’re not because it will show in the music – also not everyone needs to be a rapper, if it doesn’t come naturally try producing or even doing promo or doing photography/videography for rappers live or music videos etc.

One quote I live by and think is worth sharing comes from former NFL legend Walter Peyton (known for his charitable off fieldwork) “When you’re good at something you tell everyone…but when you’re GREAT; they’ll tell you”

It took me a long time to learn that lesson and pack my ego up, but people also forget Danny Bars is not my birth name and is a character, one that’s based 90% on me but a character nonetheless – the most common thing I hear when I chat/meet someone who’s only heard my music etc is that I’m not what they expected, I’m non-confrontational, I’m a serial monogamist (not into one night stands anymore; I’m a sucker for a legit relationship), I’m really empathetic – like cry during movies/inspirational youtube vids or news stories like its nothing-empathetic…I don’t drink booze or smoke cigs but just by choice, I do however have a ‘friend’ who will smoke something all-natural with ZERO fatalities that helps with stomach issues and PTSD from a brutal mugging and rhymes with shmanabis…but ‘he’ didn’t start till ‘he’ was in Uni and he doesn’t condone underage drug use. (or any use of ice/heroin etc)

Thanks for taking the time to read about my life, I’ve always been longwinded and that clearly hasn’t changed but if you made it to the end, good on ya! Maybe you’ll see me on stage/the street busking or maybe ill see someone reading this doing their thing – as Killer Mike once said, ‘The closest I’ve ever come to seeing or feeling God…is listening to rap music; rap music is my religion, Amen.”

Spotlight series (Part 30)

Legac.y Music Interview

This week we have 2 more dope underground Artists.

The first Artist we have is Legac.y who is a multi-talented Producer and Hip hop Artist.

Born and raised in Adelaide, Golden Grove.

Legac.y is an extremely talented Producer and his beats show the ever-evolving style and experimental drive to create the unique sound but yet cater to the individual artist.

Whether it be rapping or producing he sets the tracks ablaze with a huge level of creativity and I recommend any Artist looking for a Beat or Feature Hit him up.

Inspiration is in high supply and he incorporates the sounds of his surroundings and this mixed with percussion and drums creates a truly ambient unique sound bringing you on the journey of the creation of the music.

His Spotify and Soundcloud are full of his work and he is truly on another level of creativity.

Enough from me here is the Interview.

Why the name Legac.y?

The name legac.y started off originally as just Legacy, I thought it was a decent sounding name four years ago when I was just on SoundCloud. The name didn’t really have a meaning. Then, over time I started taking this music stuff seriously and it started to develop meaning, I came to realise that when I die and leave this place all that will be left is my music and content. That will be my lasting legacy. Another thing I realised when I started taking my music seriously is that it was extremely hard to find my music with the name Legacy, things like the police legacy and the Marshell Mathers LP 2 song Legacy always pushed my stuff down in the search list. I quickly discovered that stylising my name as legac.y both put me right at the top of the search and made it stand out.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up on the border of the northern suburbs of Adelaide in the Golden Grove / Greenwith area, and have lived there my whole life. It’s generally a nice quiet area where I live, perfect for recording at any time of the day without having to really worry about outside sound. In saying that, having an acoustically treated room also helps.

How Long have you been Rapping/Producing?

Producing wise I’m coming up on seven years, it doesn’t seem like that long at all honestly. I’ve learnt more in the last two years than I did in the five before that and that’s just through straight dedication and the willingness to learn and grow myself. As for the rapping, I don’t really like to refer to myself as a rapper; I’m not a rapper, I just talk good. I say this because when you think of a rapper you think of a masculine man, chains and by today’s mainstream standards, face tats. That’s not me even down to the talking cadence I have when I get on a song, maybe I am classed as a rapper it just doesn’t feel like an appropriate title personally.

Describe your Sound/Style?

My producing style is always evolving and changing when I work on an instrumental whether that’s for me or for a customer buying a beat, I don’t have a plan in mind. My goal is to create something that more or less hasn’t been heard or thought of before, what’s the point of putting music out if it’s not pushing boundaries? If no one stepped out of line and made music differently we’d still be making 30’s style jazz, the world would be a different place. I use producing to test the limits of what can be deemed as Hip Hop while still respecting and acknowledging the culture. I think not locking yourself into a genre, scene or sound gives you the most power creatively, it’s where the magic happens.

What would be your dream collaboration with any rapper or producer?

My dream collaboration would be Earl Sweatshirt with Ivy Lab on the beat, sheesh.

Advice for the Upcoming Producer/Artist?

People are going to tell you “go get a job, there’s only a slight chance this will work out” except most of the time it’s using way harsher language. If there’s a fire in you for music don’t let it go out, keep pushing through, keep chasing it. When you feel defeated and feel like you want to quit that’s a sign to push even harder. The truth is most artists give up in the first five years, if you don’t push through and keep at it you’ll never know how far you can go.

What are some current projects your working on?

When am I not working on projects? I’m currently working on two albums one titled Newly Lost and the other titled Newly found, which both will be released at the same time. Each album has a different approach to production and in turn the lyrics and vocals, though I don’t want to give much away. I’ve been working on this concept for years and have scrapped and restarted these albums at least four times, I just want it to be perfect.

Do you have anyone that you consider your mentor? How has their help or advice shaped you?

I wouldn’t say I’ve had one mentor that stands out above the rest, instead, it’s the little things said in quick (or sometimes long) conversations with other local musicians that add up to prove to be the most helpful. In saying that, I consider all of the talented hard-working artists that are apart of INSPYR a mentor, the amount of work and steps we’ve all taken in the last six months alone is something I wouldn’t have gotten for another year if I didn’t have my team. Strength in numbers.

Which ingredient do you think is most essential in making your sound and style the way it is?

The main ingredient for making my style is just not caring about the rules or what’s popular at the moment (I refer to it as the Fuck It Mentality) and instead of zoning out and doing what comes instinctively. I don’t know if it’s something a majority of people do or if I’m just a freak but when I say there’s no real active thinking or planning involved; I mean it. I ultimately let my subconscious make the decisions. I come up with a lot of crazier stuff that way.

Who is your top 5 Artists Or producers or Albums?

I’ll do a list of my top five artists that I get inspiration from and a top five of my favourite artists as of right now.

In no particular order.

Top five inspirational artists:

1. Tuka

2. MF DOOM

3. Flying Lotus

4. Earl Sweatshirt

5. Seth Sentry

Top five favourite artists currently

1. slowthai

2. Little Simz

3. Mick Jenkins

4. KOJAQUE

5. Ivy Lab

What is the first album you ever owned?

The first album I ever bought with my own money was Tuka’s album Life, Death, Time, Eternal. I saved up for the deluxe edition so I got the poster and three extra songs and got my mum to drive me to JB HIFI so I could get a copy. That album got me through some really hard times and still does to this day four years later. Last night as of writing this I got to perform a verse on stage right before Tuka’s set at the Fat Controller for his Selling Me Out tour and got that first album I ever bought signed by the man himself. Dreams come true if you work for them.

Message to the Youth?

My message for the youth is a short and simple one. If you have dreams, chase them. What are you going to get from sitting at home every night watching Netflix? No one is just going to give you what you dream of on a silver platter, let alone for free. Do you think Eminem got to where he is now by just sitting idly and twiddling his thumbs? No, he put in the hard work, time and dedication to get himself where he dreamed of being. People give up too easy but dreams come true if you work hard and make it happen. Don’t wait for things to fall in your lap, get out there and do it yourself.

Enough from me here is the Interview.

Why the Name Big Red Cap?

When I was about 12/13 I really got into significant other by Limp Bizkit so I started wearing a redcap all the time. People used to call me big red or red cap, eventually when I started making music I morphed it into one as ‘Bigredcap’.

Describe your Sound/Style?

I’m not sure really, I make a bunch of different music. I do boom-bap, Grime, EDM, poppy stuff. I just make whatever I want to be honest.

I try not to take myself too seriously.. for every serious song about something that means something to me.. I will also write some stupid song that’s all for the fun and vibes.

what Inspired your Music?

I used to make a lot of movies as a kid, and listen to a lot of Wu-tang, Dmx and shit. Me n my mate recorded some shit ass rap songs about our maths teacher and when I played it to people they were like ‘is that You? You sound pretty good’.. so I was like.. alright let’s make some songs.

Over time, making songs and music videos to go with them just became the only thing I wanted to do.

Advice for the upcoming artist?

I dunno man.. I’m still an up and coming artist haha. I would say just concentrate on being yourself. Keep putting the work in. Don’t let people shitting on you get you down… but still, take on valid criticism when you hear it.

Make sure you know your worth, but again.. don’t be deluded and think your entitled to everything. Just work hard, stay humble. Count your blessings. And don’t take yourself too seriously.

How Long have you been Rapping/Performing?

Too long.. as I said before since I was in school. I had a crew in the UK and we kinda did some stuff. But I only really truly started tryna make it legit when I was in Amsterdam about 9 years ago now.

When I got to Aus I basically had to start over.. which was cool because I still had a lot to learn. I feel like I’m in a good place now.

Do you have anyone that you consider your mentor? How has their help or advice shaped you?

Lots of people you come across will have advice or display behaviours that you pick up along the way. No TRUE mentors though…

What is the first album you ever owned?

The reservoir dogs soundtrack haha… I went and bought that shit cause I loved the movie so much. A lot of my early CD’s were soundtracks tbh.

First rap album I owned was 36 chambers. I played that shit to death. Then my friend gave me a copy of three dollar bill yall on a cassette.. then the doors just opened for pretty much everything.

In your opinion who is the most influential and successful artist in your genre today and why?

Honestly, it’s hard to say. For me personally, it’s Wiley.

His work rate, his versatility and his want to always bring other people through were groundbreaking to me when I was like 16 and still to this day.

He is legit one of the greatest artists of all time. He gets some credit for it but he deserves more.

What are some current projects your working on?

Me and Losty Just dropped ‘Analog Heroes’ and it’s going pretty well. We managed to top the iTunes hip-hop charts with it and we got some really dope shows coming up. Opening for Drapht in Sydney, Newcastle and Canberra will be amazing.

I’ve got some collaborations with EDM producers coming up, Jordan Magro, UberJaked & Coldeed. I’ve also just recorded a feature for Mister Oophy that I’m heading over to Newcastle to film a video for this weekend.

Other than that… In my immediate future, I think me and Losty are just gonna lay down another EP and keep the ball rolling.

What would be your dream collaboration with any rapper or producer?

Wiley and Fred Durst. Both of them are huge inspirations for me and I would love to work with them.

Who is your top 5 Artists Or producers or Albums?

Wiley, Limp Bizkit, DMX, Kano, Wu-Tang

I love nearly the whole catalogue for a few of those artists.. but the best albums are:

Wiley – Playtimes over Limp Bizkit – Significant Other DMX – The Great Depression Kano – Home Sweet Home Wu-Tang – 36 Chambers

Message to the Youth?

Don’t stab each other. Try not to let social media be too intrusive. Give everyone a chance.. have empathy and compassion for your fellow humans.

Spotlight Series (Part 26) Inspo Interview

Spotlight Series (Part 26)

Inspo Interview

This week we have 2 dope Artists and the first Rapper of the week we speak to is Inspo.

Inspo hails from Melbourne and Is another massive talent and a true underground hip hop artist.

Inspo really does inspire and gives off a high energy vibe and has a raw intelligent flow and Bars for days this guy is a weapon.

He spits hard and raw and flows over some of the dopest beats and his lyrical content is next level.

His Soundcloud is full of deadset bangers and he has tracks with some absolute Legends. Make sure you check out his Bandcamp page as well and Purchase his Head First Album and support this legend.

Also, check out his Facebook and suss his latest video drop “Truth Kills” it is a banging track and video.

His links are below make sure you check Inspo out and support this local Legend!!!

https://www.instagram.com/inspo_selfmade/?hl=en

https://www.facebook.com/inspioz/

https://www.facebook.com/Spiderholeentertainment/

Enough from me here is the Interview.

Why the name Inspo?

All the energy I’ve ever put into my craft has come from inspiration in one form or another.

My input is an inspiration, my output is an inspiration and I’m the generator in the middle bringing the two together.

Inspo made the most sense to me. I liked that it had an urban feel to it & the name itself was inspired by my brother.

Where did you grow up?

As a kid I lived in between my parent’s places, both of them moved a lot, especially my Mum and I mostly lived with her.

I was never in one place for too long, I lived in over 30 houses by the time I was 17 when I moved out of my Mums. Mainly country towns in regional Victoria, Swan Hill, Warnambool, Kyneton to name a few.

Melbourne suburbs. Ivanhoe, Lower plenty, Essendon

What inspired your music?

I’ve had a deep love for music my whole life.

I always sang as a kid and enjoyed listening to a lot of different genres.

When I was 12 I started listening to rap (2pac/Biggie) and fell in love with it. At 13 I decided to start writing my own songs. From there my love for music grew deeper and I haven’t been able to stop creating since.

I had no idea it would serve as my life’s therapy and oxygen, but as I grew older it became obvious that was my biggest connection to my life force. I realised it was the only place I could feel love when I couldn’t feel love.

I drew in music inspiration from all genres & a massive amount of artists/bands from then & still now, but Eminem, 2pac, Kurt Kobain & Bone Thugs were definitely the most inspiring to me in my youth.

Advice for the upcoming artist?

Find your unique sound and don’t be afraid to try something different.

Have respect and professionalism.

Show love & support on what you think is dope.

What is the first album you ever owned?

The Offspring – Smash

I was about 11, no regrets!

Describe your sound/style?

Majority of what I create has elements of raw, passionate, deep & melodic vibes.

What do you enjoy most about being a rapper and what do you hate the most?

Rapping my own favourite tracks to the raw instrumental & the writing process is where the loves at.

Id prefer not to deal with the marketing and business side of things & just focus purely on the music but its essential & every career has its cons, I aim to flip this to a pro.

What would be your dream collaboration with any rapper or producer?

Any dedicated quality producer that trusts and believes in my vision and vice versa.

Someone that wants to work WITH me, not for me, or for them.

I don’t care about status but they have to be compatible for the collab to work; rappers, singers or producers.

I’m always open to new offers.

In your opinion who is the most influential and successful artist in your genre today and why?

Most successful I’d say would be Chillinit, mainly because of the “Fire in the booth” he did, but it’s debatable.

Could be Hilltop Hoods but I don’t really look into the stats etc if I’m honest.

Who is your top 5 artists or producers or albums?

There are not many artists I like that have at least 10 tracks that I love so when they do it stands out a lot to me.

1 artist I can say this about is Joyner Lucas.

“The Offspring – Smash” & “Eminem – Marshall Mathers LP” had the biggest impact on me of any album I ever heard.

Message to the youth?

There’s an infinite amount of starving rappers desperate for a piece of the pie, to live off music & not have to work in a job they hate.

The reality is most of them will never make it. If you choose to be an artist, its a massive sacrifice on any other type of life you try to have.

It’s important to be genuinely passionate about your craft if you want to make a career of it.

If you arent willing to give your whole life to it, then it’s just a hobby, which is fine if that’s what you want from it.

A dedicated & productive mentality is what will take it from a hobby to a career.

https://www.facebook.com/imaginetherapper/

https://distrokid.com/hype…/imaginetherapper/vices-feat-anca

https://www.instagram.com/imaginetherapper/

Enough from me here is the Interview.

Why the Name Imagine the Rapper?

I remember watching an interview of Logic and he was asked where he got his name. He replied that his mentor told him to look through the dictionary and find a word that best described him. So I did the same and found Imagine … as for “the rapper” part , I just added that so I could be found easier on social media and search engines.

Describe your Sound/Style?

I think my Style is constantly evolving , every time I find a comfort zone I like to push myself right out of it. But overall I would say I make melodic story telling hip hop with a dash of punk.

what Inspired your Music?

I take influence from all different parts of my life , whether it is the artists that I listen to / work with , the places I’ve lived , the experiences that I’ve had or the challenges I’ve faced.

Advice for the upcoming artist?

I’m still one , but I’d have to say , never underestimate networking and always act with integrity and respect.

How Long have you been Rapping/Performing?

I started writing at 17 and I’m 22 now ,but I only started taking things seriously about 2 years ago. My first Rap performance was last year.

Do you have anyone that you consider your mentor? How has their help or advice shaped you?

I had a lot of guidance from Smizzy from (Mind Over Matter) during my early stages and still here and there today. Mostly now I’m learning a lot from from the producers I work with DeliPres and Tim Carr. I also run my new stuff by people who I’d consider close.

What is the first album you ever owned?

Simple Plan “Still Not Getting Any”

It was a birthday present from my mum and thrashed it on my sisters old CD player.

In your opinion who is the most influential and successful artist in your genre today and why?

That’s a big call. For me it would have to be Logic. The guys got hits , his a New York Times bestselling author , his also set to be starting in a movie that he wrote the script of. I just see him as an artist not just a rapper plus I value his morals and respect his thick skin against all the shit people try and put on him.

What are some current projects your working on?

I’m currently working on a joint EP with my good mate Trigz . I’ve also got almost an album worth of solo singles ready for next year as well so we’ll see what 2020 brings.

What would be your dream collaboration with any rapper or producer?

I’d have to say Hopsin ,MGK or Horrorshow all those artists influenced my sound a lot , so ether those dudes or a feature on a Hilltop Hoods song.

Who is your top 3 Artists Or producers or Albums?

That’s way too hard I’m just going to go with Logic , Hopsin and Horrorshow.

Message to the Youth?

You don’t have to follow in anyone’s foot steps , don’t be afraid to make your own path. Sacrifice is essential in success , Sometimes that 10 hours a week you spend with your Girlfriend watching Netflix or your mates getting high is the only thing standing between you and your dream … make a choice.

Peace
