Spotlight Series (Part 32)

This brings about the 1st Artist of the Week.

Jeneral Mc is a solo Hip Hop artist Straight out of the Hills region of Adelaide, South Australia.

He is a Stylistic Assassin on the Mic and a versatile MC that has one hell of a delivery.

Whether it be switching the flows or spitting the raw lyricism and he raps a tapestry of skill over well-produced beats and he is a major talent.

To me, I get the hint of Nostalgia and a raw memorable experience as you can see feel the message it sets the scene and shows you his vision.

I see Jeneral MC being a big name in Oz Hip Hop.

Supporting the likes of Bliss N Eso, Terra Firma and many more, Even woking with Top tier producers like Eslev, Badcop and debate and Many more.

Enough from me Here is the Interview!!!

Why the name Jeneral?

It’s a play on words using the name of a dear family member

Where did you grow up?

All over the place… Earliest memories are from a small town in Victoria called Harrow, then Hamilton, then moved to SA in Mt Pleasant, Gumeracha, Birdwood and finally spent most of my younger years in Aldgate.

What inspired your music?

Different things inspire different songs. Sometimes it’s just a party jam, sometimes it’s relationships with women and friends, sometimes it’s world issues and sometimes I just wanna get high and write meaningless words that are fun to rhyme together

How Long have you been Rapping/Producing?

Been rapping for almost 20 years now. I don’t do a lot of production, I prefer to focus on the song structure and lyricism.

Describe your Sound/Style?

This is so subjective because we can only describe sounds based on what we’ve heard in the past. I sound like JENERAL. If you haven’t heard him before, then go check him out on YouTube or Spotify!

Advice for the upcoming artist?

Take the time to understand what your highest values are. And know that these will change over time. Spend your time doing things that align with your highest values. Learn to be ok with people saying your music isn’t what they’re looking for and understand that that is just one person’s opinion… And opinions are just like assholes… Everyone got one. Know your goals. Put ’em on your wall. And take massive action towards them every single day. Boom.

What is the first album you ever owned?

I went to the States when I was 14 to visit my sister and she showed me this deal where you could sign up for a CD catalogue and get the first 10 CDs for $1 each – then the plan was to just skip the country and never buy anymore haha. This was my first music purchase… Can’t remember all of them but some were

Warren G; Regulate… G Funk Era Nas; Illmatic Pearl Jam; Vitalogy Cake; Fashion Nugget Smashing Pumpkins; Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness Nirvana; Unplugged in New York

What would be your dream collaboration with any rapper or producer?

Rick Rubin would be the ultimate producer for me… And doing a track with The Beatnuts would be mad

Do you have anyone that you consider your mentor? How has their help or advice shaped you?

This is something I wish I made an effort to bring into the mix… But I’ve had help from mates along the way like Visionz from Soul Elixr, Eslev from Full Tote Odds, Balazs Varga and some hot tips from PJ Murton. They’ve all helped in different ways from song structuring, production, promotion, marketing and stage presence. I would say I’ve had remote mentors in lyricism by studying the greats like Common, Guru, Talib Kweli, Eminem, Pharaoh Monche and Mos Def.

What are some current projects your working on?

Just finished promoting my second single Johnny Oh Snap… Out now on Spotify. Got my debut EP coming out in February 2020 and am putting together the film clip for the title track “Cold Chillin” at the moment.

And am currently writing the next songs for the second EP.

What is your top 5 Artists Or producers or Albums?

This is huge so I’ll just stick with producers Griz Just Blaze Kanye Rick Rubin The Beatnuts

Message to the Youth?

The quality of your life is dictated by your beliefs, about yourself, others and the meaning you give to events that happen. We can’t control everything that happens to us. But you can choose what you believe and the meaning you assign to things outside your control. So get good at choosing the right beliefs. And get a mentor … Doesn’t have to be some guru, just someone who has achieved what you want and is willing to share their experiences to help you on your journey.
