Enough from me here is the Interview.
Why the name Legac.y?
The name legac.y started off originally as just Legacy, I thought it was a decent sounding name four years ago when I was just on SoundCloud. The name didn’t really have a meaning. Then, over time I started taking this music stuff seriously and it started to develop meaning, I came to realise that when I die and leave this place all that will be left is my music and content. That will be my lasting legacy. Another thing I realised when I started taking my music seriously is that it was extremely hard to find my music with the name Legacy, things like the police legacy and the Marshell Mathers LP 2 song Legacy always pushed my stuff down in the search list. I quickly discovered that stylising my name as legac.y both put me right at the top of the search and made it stand out.
Where did you grow up?
I grew up on the border of the northern suburbs of Adelaide in the Golden Grove / Greenwith area, and have lived there my whole life. It’s generally a nice quiet area where I live, perfect for recording at any time of the day without having to really worry about outside sound. In saying that, having an acoustically treated room also helps.
How Long have you been Rapping/Producing?
Producing wise I’m coming up on seven years, it doesn’t seem like that long at all honestly. I’ve learnt more in the last two years than I did in the five before that and that’s just through straight dedication and the willingness to learn and grow myself. As for the rapping, I don’t really like to refer to myself as a rapper; I’m not a rapper, I just talk good. I say this because when you think of a rapper you think of a masculine man, chains and by today’s mainstream standards, face tats. That’s not me even down to the talking cadence I have when I get on a song, maybe I am classed as a rapper it just doesn’t feel like an appropriate title personally.
Describe your Sound/Style?
My producing style is always evolving and changing when I work on an instrumental whether that’s for me or for a customer buying a beat, I don’t have a plan in mind. My goal is to create something that more or less hasn’t been heard or thought of before, what’s the point of putting music out if it’s not pushing boundaries? If no one stepped out of line and made music differently we’d still be making 30’s style jazz, the world would be a different place. I use producing to test the limits of what can be deemed as Hip Hop while still respecting and acknowledging the culture. I think not locking yourself into a genre, scene or sound gives you the most power creatively, it’s where the magic happens.
What would be your dream collaboration with any rapper or producer?
My dream collaboration would be Earl Sweatshirt with Ivy Lab on the beat, sheesh.
Advice for the Upcoming Producer/Artist?
People are going to tell you “go get a job, there’s only a slight chance this will work out” except most of the time it’s using way harsher language. If there’s a fire in you for music don’t let it go out, keep pushing through, keep chasing it. When you feel defeated and feel like you want to quit that’s a sign to push even harder. The truth is most artists give up in the first five years, if you don’t push through and keep at it you’ll never know how far you can go.
What are some current projects your working on?
When am I not working on projects? I’m currently working on two albums one titled Newly Lost and the other titled Newly found, which both will be released at the same time. Each album has a different approach to production and in turn the lyrics and vocals, though I don’t want to give much away. I’ve been working on this concept for years and have scrapped and restarted these albums at least four times, I just want it to be perfect.
Do you have anyone that you consider your mentor? How has their help or advice shaped you?
I wouldn’t say I’ve had one mentor that stands out above the rest, instead, it’s the little things said in quick (or sometimes long) conversations with other local musicians that add up to prove to be the most helpful. In saying that, I consider all of the talented hard-working artists that are apart of INSPYR a mentor, the amount of work and steps we’ve all taken in the last six months alone is something I wouldn’t have gotten for another year if I didn’t have my team. Strength in numbers.
Which ingredient do you think is most essential in making your sound and style the way it is?
The main ingredient for making my style is just not caring about the rules or what’s popular at the moment (I refer to it as the Fuck It Mentality) and instead of zoning out and doing what comes instinctively. I don’t know if it’s something a majority of people do or if I’m just a freak but when I say there’s no real active thinking or planning involved; I mean it. I ultimately let my subconscious make the decisions. I come up with a lot of crazier stuff that way.
Who is your top 5 Artists Or producers or Albums?
I’ll do a list of my top five artists that I get inspiration from and a top five of my favourite artists as of right now.
In no particular order.
Top five inspirational artists:
1. Tuka
2. MF DOOM
3. Flying Lotus
4. Earl Sweatshirt
5. Seth Sentry
Top five favourite artists currently
1. slowthai
2. Little Simz
3. Mick Jenkins
4. KOJAQUE
5. Ivy Lab
What is the first album you ever owned?
The first album I ever bought with my own money was Tuka’s album Life, Death, Time, Eternal. I saved up for the deluxe edition so I got the poster and three extra songs and got my mum to drive me to JB HIFI so I could get a copy. That album got me through some really hard times and still does to this day four years later. Last night as of writing this I got to perform a verse on stage right before Tuka’s set at the Fat Controller for his Selling Me Out tour and got that first album I ever bought signed by the man himself. Dreams come true if you work for them.
Message to the Youth?
My message for the youth is a short and simple one. If you have dreams, chase them. What are you going to get from sitting at home every night watching Netflix? No one is just going to give you what you dream of on a silver platter, let alone for free. Do you think Eminem got to where he is now by just sitting idly and twiddling his thumbs? No, he put in the hard work, time and dedication to get himself where he dreamed of being. People give up too easy but dreams come true if you work hard and make it happen. Don’t wait for things to fall in your lap, get out there and do it yourself.
