Enough from me here is the Interview.
Where did the name Kool B come from?
I came up with the name Kool B because I am inspired by and wanted to show respect to the godfather of Hip Hop, Dj Kool Herc, so I used the Kool from his name and added the B from my real name which is Bevan.
Where did you grow up?
I was born in NZ in 79 and my family migrated to Aus when I was a baby and I grew up in a place called Morphett Vale in the ’80s, which was a pretty rough place to grow up in the ’80s and I think it still is. Then we moved to a place called Moana “Mowies” in the ’90s which is a coastal town in the south side of Adelaide and it’s where I did most of my damage growing up haha. Nowadays I live pretty close to the CBD of ADL.
What Inspired your Music?
People might find this strange but I find most of my inspiration towards music and my style of music from listening to Punk Rock bands like Strungout, Propagandhi, Good Riddance, Nofx, Transplants, Sublime and then NAS, KRS ONE, Logic, Rakim, Public Enemy, Ice Cube, Eminem, Vinnie Paz, Immortal Technique, T.I, Jay Z etc etc. I’m after more in a song than just people spitting bars and shit, I need a catchy arse hook to sing along to as well, I guess that’s from my punk side and it’s what separates me from the rest of the scene.
How Long have you been Rapping/Producing/Making Beats
I think I started rapping in about 2008/09. I used to sing in Punk bands up till this point. I tried to break up an argument between my mate and this dude and the dude grabbed my throat and fucked up my singing voice, that’s when I decided to start writing raps. I used to try and make my own beats but I was hopeless at it so I gave up and now just buy beats off producers.
What are some current projects your working on?
Well, I just released my brand new EP by the name of Honestly Anomaly which is available on all platforms. I released my first album in 2017 called Anti Hero of the Subterranean under Bentley Records from NYC. This is my second one and I released it totally independent and it’s been getting a fair bit of love, which is nice. I’ve got a collab with a producer from Brazil by the name of Ricky Ivybez and also one with a producer from Los Angeles by the name of Beyond Blcck, also a collab with Jestures and one with Steve Makes also. Too much music coming out my heads about to blow up.
Advice for the Upcoming Artist?
BE ORIGINAL!!!!! Find what makes you a freak and rap about it. Don’t just spit bars every song and rap every song about Xanax and wanting to die, if you’re releasing songs that sound the same as the last one you just released, then I won’t be bumpin it. Don’t be afraid to sing, or get people to feature on your songs who can sing. Pay the big bucks and get your music recorded by a professional. It makes a massive difference in your end product and you can get studio time for around $100 per hour but professional music engineers will get the job done quicker and better.
Who is your top 5?
NAS Krs One Eminem De La Soul Public Enemy
I don’t know, that’s close enough to my top 5 anyway. I don’t really listen to Australian Hip Hop but my top 5 from Aus would be…
Delta Muph & Plutonic Thundamentals Bliss n Eso The Herd
Who would be your Ultimate Feature/Colab?
USA: NAS, Ice Cube or Snoop Dogg AUS: Delta, Bliss n Eso or Tuka
Message to the Youth?
Be nice to each other. Don’t be a bully. Stop fighting at shows, Nobody likes a dickhead. Work hard hard hard on your music before you release it! I wrote raps for 7 years before I felt comfortable enough to release it. IT TAKES TIME! DON’T RUSH THE PROCESS. And I can’t stress this enough, COME ORIGINAL! Everyone’s sounding the same out there. Love each other, the world sucks, so love is the best thing you can share with another human being. Oh yeah, and go cop my music on Spotify and Apple Music and what not ha ha.
Peace. Love. Unity and having fun.
